Die erste Single zum neuen PFM-Album ist da! Leider nicht mehr in der Form, wie es das früher mal gegeben hat, also in physischer Form, am besten noch auf Vinyl (zu meinen schönsten Erinnerungen zählt die Jagd nach der Marillion-Maxi Incommunicado im Mai 1987, einige Wochen vor dem letzten Album Clutching at Straws ... Aber ich schweife ab.) - sondern natürlich als Download oder eben zum kostenlosen Anhören bei Youtube.

Das erste musikalische Lebenszeichen vom neuen PFM-Album Emotional Tattoos kommt in zwei Versionen daher, auf Englisch und Italienisch: Central District beziehungsweise Quartiere Generale. Das ist schon mal gut. Das Stück selbst ist eine recht geradlinige Nummer (rechnet da jemand ernsthaft mit Airplay? Gut, vielleicht in Italien ...), in der die Prog-Wurzeln der Band bestenfalls zu erahnen sind, die Geige erinnert noch am ehesten an den Sound der 70er.

Keine Übernummer, aber nett anzuhören, gefällt mir auf Italienisch einen Tick besser. Auf dem Album darf's dann gerne ein wenig vertrackter werden. Zum Reinhören:

To the very day, Premiata Forneria Marconi (aka PFM) is considered the most influential and respected Italian rock band and on October 27th, 2017 InsideOutMusic will release the band's new studio album "Emotional Tattoos". Now, the band reveals the album's striking cover artwork created by Stefano Bonora / Artkademy.

The band comments: "On the cover you see a fantastic spaceship run by Franz and Patrick, bringing the band to places never explored before, introducing the audience into the new PFM world, where music has not only one identity but evolves and embraces many genres. PFM is famous for never repeating previous records and "Emotional Tattoos" is an album that will leave emotions on the skin, like when a spaceship lands in a fantastic world with vegetation and animals in harmony with each other."

PFM began writing their new opus in 2016, started recording in early 2017 and finished both an English and Italian version of the over an hour long record in July at Metropolis Recording Studio with Alessandro Marcantoni.

PFM is a very eclectic and exuberant musical group with a distinctive style that impressively combines rock, progressive, and classical music into one mesmerizing sonic entity. Formed in 1970, the band quickly gained a prominent place on the international scene by making it to the Billboard charts (for 1973's "Photos Of Ghosts"), and winning a gold record in Japan while constantly ruling the charts in their home country until today. PFM were honored with position #50 in the "UK Classic Rock Hall of Fame" of the 100 most important artists in the world as well as being awarded two gold records in their home country in 1971 and 1997.

"Emotional Tattoos" marks the return of the band's trademark sound after two rather experimental releases. The new album takes a melodic rock route while offering surprising musical twists and turns including moody synths, orchestral arrangements, straight-forward guitar-driven passages and wonderful ballads.

Das ist mal eine Hammer-Meldung: Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM), meine Lieblings-Prog-Band aus Italien, veröffentlicht ihre nächste Platte bei Insideout Music, dem mit weitem Abstand besten Prog-Label (nicht nur Deutschlands). Das ist klasse, bedeutet es doch, dass man die Scheibe, die Emotional Tattoos heißen wird, nicht bei irgendwelchen obskuren Händlern suchen muss, sondern in den meisten Plattenläden kriegen wird, außerdem darf man sich, wie bei Insideout üblich, auf eine Vinyl-Version freuen und auf eine ordentlich verpackte und aufgemachte CD. Und es gibt natürlich die Hoffnung, die Band nach dem Konzert vom vergangenen September noch einmal in Deutschland live erleben zu dürfen ...

Das Einzige, was mir im Moment ein wenig Sorgen macht, ist der englische Titel des Albums: PFM sind einfach am besten, wenn sie beim Italienischen bleiben. Aber wir werden sehen ...

PFM began writing their new opus, entitled 'Emotional Tattoos', in 2016, started recording in early 2017 and are about to finalize it in July! The worldwide release is currently planned for late October.

Wie gerade bekannt wurde, ist heute John Wetton gestorben. Der frühere Sänger und Bassist von King Crimson und UK war zuletzt ja wieder vor allem mit Asia aktiv, musste aber nach einer Krebserkrankung einige geplante Konzerte absagen (Ironie der Geschichte: Als Vertreter ist Billy Sherwood eingesprungen, der auch Chris Squire bei Yes ersetzt hat). Von John Wetton war dazu folgendes Statement zu lesen:

While I am naturally disappointed to miss the beginning of what I know will be an historic ASIA tour, I am intending to return to the stage with Asia later in 2017, dates soon to be announced.I know this decision will be in the best interests of my health and our fans, in the long run.

Jetzt ist er wohl dem Krebs erlegen. Ich bin ehrlich geschockt.

Die drei Studioalben mit King Crimson, Larks' Tongues in Aspic (1973), Starless and Bible black (1974) und Red (1974), zählen zweifelsohne zu den Höhepunkten des Progressive Rock und natürlich auch zu meinen Lieblingsplatten. Auf den Solo-Künstler John Wetton bin ich persönlich mit dem wirklich starken Album Battle Lines (1994) aufmerksam geworden (noch ein Querverweis: Der Titelsong ist auch in dem Film Chasing the Deer zu hören, in dem Fish eine kleine Rolle spielt). Live habe ich ihn dreimal erlebt: solo mit einer klasse Band, zu der unter anderem Martin Orford (damals noch IQ) gehörte, mit den reformierten Asia und bei der UK-Reunion mit Eddie Jobson. Das waren drei sehr gute Konzerte.

As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of ASIA to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration.

Hier ist heute schon Weihnachten - schönen Dank nach Haddington, das dicke Päckchen mit Fishs neuesten Veröffentlichungen ist überraschend früh eingetroffen. Der Inhalt: die Remaster-Version des Albums "Field of Crows", die neue Live-Scheibe "The Moveable Feast", ein T-Shirt von der Feast-Tour, das es umsonst dazu gab, und Fishs Weihnachtskarte.

Der Reihe nach:





"Field of Crows" ist das vierte Fish-Album, das in der "The Remasters"-Serie erscheint (nach "Sunsets on Empire", "Raingods with Zippos" und "Fellini Days"). Auf den drei CDs finden sich neben dem Studio-Album (im Original 2003 veröffentlicht, hier in einer von Chris Kimsey remixten Fassung) allerlei Demos und Live-Aufnahmen, teils bisher unveröffentlicht, teils auch schon auf Aufnahmen wie "Communion" (CD, 2007) und "Scattering Crows" (DVD, 2005) veröffentlicht. Auf "Field of Crows" sind übrigens unter anderem die beiden Big-Country-Musiker Bruce Watson, der die meisten Songs mitverfasst hat, und Mark Brzezicki (schon auf Fishs 1990er Solo-Debüt "Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors" und der anschließenden Tour dabei) zu hören, daneben aber auch die üblichen Bekannten aus dem Fish-Kosmos wie Frank Usher oder Steve Vantsis. Als Bonus zur Musik gibt es in den Liner Notes wahrhaft epische Ausführungen von Fish (wenn der Mann mal ins Labern kommt, gibt es kein Halten), jede Menge Fotos und neues und altes Artwork von Mark Wilkinson.

Auf den neuen Chris-Kimsey-Mix bin ich sehr gespannt - er hat ja die über jeden Zweifel erhabenen Marillion-Alben "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) und "Clutching at Straws" (1987) produziert, dann aber später auch Fishs zweite Solo-Platte "Internal Exile" (1991), die einfach nicht so gut klingt wie der von Jon Kelly produzierte Vorgänger "Vigil". Allerdings war auch "Field of Crows" nie mein Lieblingsalbum, vielleicht hat er da ja an den richtigen Stellschrauben gedreht.

Die Scheibe wandert dann auch nachher gleich in den CD-Player, wenn ich mit den Live-Aufnahmen durch bin ...





"The Moveable Feast" mit dem Untertitel "European Tour 2013-2015" enthält auf gleich vier CDs zwei komplette Konzerte: den Auftritt im Substage in Karlsruhe vom 23. Oktober 2013 und den Gig aus der Posthalle in Würzburg vom 29. Oktober 2014. Das Besondere: In Karlsruhe stand ich im Publikum, den kurzen Rückblick gibt es hier (auch wenn das "The Company"-Video mittlerweile von Youtube entfernt wurde).

Die beiden Setlisten sind angemessen unterschiedlich, Überschneidungen gibt's eigentlich nur bei den Songs vom aktuellsten Album "A Feast of Consequences" (2013), nämlich mit den Titeln "Perfume River", "A Feast of Consequences", "Crucifix Corner", "The Gathering" und "Thistle Alley". Sonst spielen sich Fish und Band munter durch seinen Back-Katalog und haben auch erfreulich viele Marillion-Songs im Repertoire. Die Band besteht bei beiden Konzerten aus Robin Boult (Gitarre), Steve Vantsis (Bass) und Gavin Griffiths (Schlagzeug), am Keyboard sitzt in Karlsruhe Foss Paterson, in Würzburg John Beck.

Auch bei "The Moveable Feast" stammt das gelungene Artwork von Mark Wilkinson, es gibt viele Fotos und ausführlichste Liner Notes von Onkel Fish, die ich mir dann auch noch irgendwann zu Gemüte führen werde.





Das T-Shirt gab's umsonst dazu (für jeden der mindestens zwei Remasters oder das neue Live-Album plus ein Remaster ordert); da wehre ich mich logischerweise nicht.

Mein Weihnachten ist also gerettet, falls jemand jetzt angefixt wurde und die Scheiben noch bestellen will, kann es aber eng werden - inzwischen streikt in Großbritannien die Post ...

Mir fehlen gerade die Worte.

Greg's soaring voice and skill as a musician will be remembered by all who knew his music and recordings made with ELP and King Crimson. I have fond memories of those great years we had in the 1970s and many memorable shows we performed together.

Having lost Keith this year as well, has made this particularly hard for all of us. As Greg sang at the end of Pictures At An Exhibition, "death is life." His music can now live forever in the hearts of all who loved him.

Die Europa-Tour von Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM), der besten Progressive-Rock-Band Italiens, hat mit zwei Konzerten in England begonnen: am 14. September in London (O2 Academy Islington) und am 15. September in Manchester (Sound Control). Weitere Auftritte: gestern in Verviers/Belgien, heute in Zoetermeer/Holland, am Dienstag in Pratteln/Schweiz und dann der - vor allem für mich - krönende Abschluss am Mittwoch, 21. September, im Colos-Saal in Aschaffenburg. Dann werde ich die Band, die 1972 ihr erstes Album „Storia di un Minuto“ veröffentlicht hat, zum ersten Mal überhaupt live sehen. Voraussichtlich also ein ähnlich historisches Erlebnis wie vor knapp zehn Tagen bei King Crimson in der Stuttgarter Liederhalle (geniales Konzert!).

Die PFM-Setlist, die via setlist.fm von den beiden England-Konzerten vermeldet wird, steigert die Vorfreude noch, falls das überhaupt möglich ist. Folgende Titel stehen drauf:

Der Kenner sieht: Die Songauswahl beschränkt sich auf die siebziger Jahre, in der PFM ihre stärksten Werke veröffentlicht haben. Natürlich wäre es schön, wenn beispielsweise (die bei den Südamerika-Konzerten im Mai noch gespielten) „Maestro della Voce“ (von „Suonare suonare“, 1980) oder „La Rivoluzione“ („Serendipity“, 2000) im Repertoire wären, die beide auf Live-Aufnahmen immer einen guten Eindruck hinterlassen. Oder eine der Fabrizio-de-André-Nummern, die PFM immer mal wieder gerne spielen. Oder eins der starken Instrumental-Stücke von „Stati di immaginazione“ (2006). Aber wir wollen mal nicht zu gierig sein. Zumal sich bis zum Konzert am Mittwoch ja auch noch das eine oder andere an der Setlist ändern kann †¦
