Dear Friends,

"In the future, video game battles will be a matter of life or death." (Tron, 1982)

25 years after the release of the film Tron, Maison d'Ailleurs co-organizes, in partnership with the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) and the Neuchâtel Ethnography Museum (MEN), the "Imaging the Future" symposium, on July 4th and 5th, at the Théâtre du Passage, Neuchâtel.

With prestigious guests, the symposium will explore how digital images tend to redesign other worlds, defined by their own rules and values. Are these so called virtual worlds a parallel reality? Or will they even become a subsitute for our old worlds?

Full programme and information available here: http://www.imagingthefuture.ch

Entry is free.

And as the NIFFF (http://www.nifff.ch)has set up a new Open Air cinema this year on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, we're glad to give 2 free tickets to that cinema on the nights of the symposium (July 4th and 5th), if you're among the first ten people to send an email to <maison@ailleurs.ch>!

All best,

Soeben ist der aktuelle Newsletter des Maison d'Ailleurs eingetrudelt:

Dear friends,

A few news from Elsewhere,

- Solar art: English artist James Hutchinson (http://www.jameshutchinson.org/) presents his 8-volume flick book "Solar Ball" from 15 September in the museum library. James Hutchinson assembles images which together give a generic impression of something which resembles a strangely familiar object. Whilst not describing the object in a realist manner, the viewer "understands" it, and its constant shifting and evolution, which emphasises the passing of time...

- Media utopia: The museum was recently featured on a whole (impressive) page in Time magazine (European edition). Hurray! Read the article here:
http://www.time.com/...1646044,00.html

- Inner utopias: Our "Mirror Wolrds" exhibition, showing Mario Del Curto's photographs of personal utopias, just opened in the Museum im Lagerhaus in St-Gallen (http://www.museumimlagerhaus.ch).

- Dystopias: With the help of Fox films (http://www.fox.ch) and Warnerbros (http://www.warnerbros.ch) we are happy to allow you to discover the latest Juan Carlos Fresnadillo SF film, "28 Weeks Later" (released in Switzerland next week). A terrible virus has created desolation in England, turning most people into savage beasts. Six months later, everything seems back to normal... But the Rage is not over... Be one of the first twenty people to send an email to <maison@ailleurs.ch> to get a free entry to a screening anywhere in Switzerland!

- Entropia: Finally, please note that the museum will be closed for renovation and the preparation of our next show from Sept. 24th to Oct. 28th. There are only a few days left to (re)discover Entropia (http://www.ailleurs....po_d.php?id=ent).

Hoping to see you soon,

My.

Dear friends,

Maison d'Ailleurs is pleased to invite you to the opening of "An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things - Works inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's Commonplace Book" on Saturday, October 27, 2007, 6 PM at the museum.

Following an invitation from Maison d'Ailleurs to commemorate the 70th anniversary of H. P. Lovecraft's death in an exhibition, one hundred artists (Rick Sardinha, Paul Carrick, Jeff Remmer, Guy Davis...) have used a notebook by this visionnary writer to explore the abysmal depths evoked therein, transforming the museum in a place filled with things better left unspokenŠ

Among other things, the exhibit will also present The Call of Cthulhu, a film by the H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society and a series of interactive fictions.
Bilingual catalogue (128 pages, 90 illustrations) with original texts by Jeffrey Ford, H. H. Løyche, Lucius Shepard, Norman Spinrad, Ian Watson and more....

Be warned! Be there!

Dear Friends,

Some news from Maison d'Ailleurs, as nights grow long...

-> Exhibitions here and elsewhere: at the museum, An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things, to help you get over the Christmas spirit! 500 original images based on the work of H. P. Lovecraft (http://www.ailleurs....o_d.php?id=love)... In Japan, Mirror Worlds at No-Ma Borderless Art Museum (http://www.no-ma.jp/...tion/dt_25.html) to expand our horizons...

-> Jules Verne exhibition space: these last few weeks have been sadly marked by the tragic death of our collaborator and friend Stéphane Jaquenoud. Stéphane was our museographer, in charge of almost everything in our Verne project and we will miss him dearly. Today, our thoughts are with his family, and we will strive to make the Jules Verne room in the way he defined it.
So far, we have gathered 900'000.- Swiss Francs for this project and are getting close to the amount we need to complete it as planned (CHF 1'180'000.-); at this stage, your help is essential. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any information you might need on the Jules Verne exhibition space and be generous here: http://www.ailleurs....rne/english.php

-> At the movies: Maison d'Ailleurs, with the help of Fox films (http://www.fox.ch) and Warnerbros (http://www.warnerbros.ch) invites you to discover "Alien vs. Predator - Requiem". Be one of the first twenty people to send your name and address to <maison@ailleurs.ch> to get a free entry to a screening anywhere in Switzerland...

Have a great festive season and a beautiful year 2008. Don't forget to be happy.

Lovecraftiana

Dear friends,

Some news around "An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things - Works inspired by H. P. Lovecraft's Commonplace Book", still on display at the museum until April 6th, 2008.

-> In collaboration with the museum, the podcast utopod (the best podcast in French for SF short stories) proposes an episode with six short texts written for the catalogue of the show. Original works by: James Morrow, Lucius Shepard, Valerio Evangelisti, Pierre-Yves Lador, Jacques Finné and Eugène. Listen to them here: http://www.utopod.com/ (in French).

-> The Swiss National Television (TSR) has just done a nice report of the exhibit. You can see it online here: http://www.tsr.ch/ts...208;vid=8767356

-> The poster of the exhibit (created by Julien Notter and Sébastien Vigne, http://www.at-elier.net) is a huge success and dozens of copies have been sold all over the world! It has now been selected by the Chaumont International Poster Festival in France, and the Australian Company "People Like Us" (http://www.peoplelikeusstyle.com/) is releasing T-Shirts and iPod accessories with the design very soon...

We hope to see you soon Elsewhere,

Dear friends,

A few dates when we'd love to see you Elsewhere:

-> The Jules Verne exhibition space, an extension of Maison d'Ailleurs devoted to the famous French writer and to extraordinary journeys, will open on Saturday, October 4th, 2008.
As you may know, M. Jean-Michel Margot has recently donated his exceptional Jules Verne collection to the City of Yverdon-les-Bains. The Maison d'Ailleurs has been given the mission to create an exhibition space for this collection and to ensure its opening to the general public.
The first permanent exhibit space for us will be linked to the main museum building by an impressive footbridge and will allow our visitors to discover rare documents and the world of early science fiction.
On October 4th, this new space will open with a series of events including a "20'000 leagues under the sea" play at the Yverdon-les-Bains theater, as well as a new temporary exhibition which will see us return to a favorite island of ours... More on all this soon!

-> To mark the end of An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things http://www.ailleurs...._d.php?id=love), Maison d'Ailleurs is organizing a guided tour of the exhibit and a small gathering on Saturday, April 5th, from 5 pm onwards. Some of the artists might drop by and we hope you can join us for a last glance of the show and a few glasses of wine... Free entry!

[polemics] The conquest of the North Pole by air
on Saturday April 26th, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Follow the amazing expeditions to the last terra incognita on Earth: the North Pole... Made possible through centuries of dreams and technological progress, the polar conquest was an international challenge only comparable to the Space adventure today.

As we might be seeing the last of the ice caps, Maison d'Ailleurs welcomes you to a trip between science fiction and a reality almost too incredible to believe when it comes to reaching the North Pole by airships...

[polemics] is a collaboration with http://www.hepta.aero and is made possible with the support of http://www.ylb.ch / http://www.ilford.ch / http://www.payot.ch / http://www.hebdo.ch / http://www.verkehrshaus.ch

Dear all,

The exhibition "Swiss Design in Hollywood", produced by Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council and organized by the Maison d'Ailleurs, the museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys in Yverdon-les-Bains, will be shown for the first time during the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (http://nifff.ch/).

Swiss Design in Hollywood retraces the work and impact of Swiss artists in the domains of design and digital imagery in international film productions.

This exhibition also seeks to emphasise the personal influence of certain designers or illustrators - whether independent or employed by the big special effects studios - , on the aesthetics of film and video game production, without forgetting their personal achievements.

The exhibition will open on Wed. July 2nd 2008 at 630 pm at the théâtre du Passage (http://www.theatredupassage.ch/) in Neuchâtel, in the presence of John Howe and Christian Lorenz Scheurer. We hope to see you there!

SDIH will then be available to be shown throughout the world...

See you soon in Neuchâtel or Elsewhere,

Music and Science Fiction: call for submissions

A new music compilation CD, produced by Maison d'Ailleurs (museum of Science Fiction in Switzerland), is now accepting submissions. The CD will be produced in 5600 copies, distributed for free with the music magazine Vibrations in March 2010, to accompany a Music and Science Fiction exhibition at the museum.

About the exhibition

Maison d'Ailleurs is staging an exhibition about Music and Science Fiction from March 6th to August 1st 2010, which will explore the way that Science Fiction has permeated music genres. Not only has Science Fiction been linked to technological innovation in musical instruments since the theremin, but thanks to its metaphorical potential, Science Fiction narratives and images have been widely used by musicians, from Sun Ra to Magma, Kraftwerk to Carl Craig, Louis and Bebe Barron to Hawkwind...

About the CD

We thought it was high time to reflect on the many contemporary connections between music and Science Fiction, by asking musicians to come up with new projects inspired by the aesthetics, narratives or sounds of the genre. Submissions can relate to the field in many ways, including but not limited to.
- works which use Science Fiction related instruments (such as the theremin, moog, mellotron)
- works which include sonic interpretation of ideas or sounds from Science Fiction

Dear friends,

Some news from Elsewhere:

* The "Lines of Flight" show on Mervyn Peake
(http://www.ailleurs....x.php?s=en&m=10) has been praised by the international press:

"The most spectacular exhibition of Mervyn Peake drawings to be shown on the continent" (Michael Moorcock in Financial Times) "A very beautiful show, run and see it!" (France Culture)

Now is the time to come and see the exhibit by yourself!

* Tales and workshops around Mervyn Peake:
On Saturday December 19th (3 pm), storyteller extraordinaire Nasma Al'Amir
(http://www.unelucioledansloreille.ch) will take you on a journey through Mervyn Peake's world (45 minutes, in French, included in the normal entry
price) and on December 12th and January 23rd (10 am), kids can learn more about Peake while creating their own artworks (info at maison@ailleurs.ch).

* Friends of the Museum: give us a Christmas present!
Help Maison d'Ailleurs, the one and only Museum of Science Fiction, Utopia and Extraordinary Journeys in its activities by becoming a friend of the museum, for just 30 Swiss Francs (or 20
Euros) a year (you can give more of course). We need your support!
The five first people contacting
"amda@ailleurs.ch" to pledge (or paying directly to this address by PayPal) will be offered the "Lines of Flight" catalogue (to be retrieved at the museum).

* And many more news about what we do (exhibits, conferences, strange deambulations in Budapest with the Blue Man), in our blog:
http://www.ailleurs....ex.php?s=en&m=6 and you can follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Myspace...

All the very best and have a great festive season!

Dear friends,

Maison d'Ailleurs and Ô Musique are pleased to invite you to the opening of

Galactic Hits - Music and Science Fiction

Saturday 6th March 2010, 6 pm

Theremin preformance by Chloé Stalder and Coralie Ehinger, and launch of the Galactic Hits CD
curated for the show in partnership with Vibrations magazine.

The opening will be followed by an unplugged concert by The Young Gods at Echandole (930 pm - booking: http://www.echandole.ch).

Space rock, cosmic jazz, scifidelic, futurepop: many musicians have used the metaphorical potential of SF to express their worldview, resulting in an original synthesis of these two major forms of expression of 20th century popular culture. Through 324 LPs, music videos, strange instruments and old posters, Maison d'Ailleurs invites you to explore the close links between music and science fiction...

We hope to see you Elsewhere!

Dear friends,

Maison d'Ailleurs Foundation has the honor of inviting you to the opening of the exhibition
Do Robots Dream of Spring ?
The Art of Ken Rinaldo

on Saturday 18th September 2010, 6 pm, in the presence of the artist

Maison d'Ailleurs is proud to present an exhibition of the works of american artist Ken Rinaldo.

New media artist, author and theorist Ken Rinaldo creates robotic, bioart and transpecies installations. His works have been commissioned and presented internationally and have received major awards. Rinaldo is currently an associate professor in the Art & Technology program at the Ohio State University, USA.

By creating immersive environments, Ken Rinaldo presents works to be experienced. Using technologies which surround us and questionning them in a poetic way, he goes beyond the clichés usually associated with robots and sets our imagination in motion...

The opening will be followed by Mécanologie, a concert by Pierre Bastien
at Echandole (21h30)

Pierre Bastien performs with his own orchestra called Mecanium : an ensemble of musical automatons constructed from meccano parts and activated by electro-motors, that are playing on acoustic instruments from all over the world...

We hope to see you in the House!
