Under Jules Verne's gaze, an invitation to celebrate

On February 8, 2011, Jules Verne would have been 183 years old. This anniversary was the ideal date to mark the beginning of new extraordinary journeys: that of Jennifer Bochud to the Longines museum in St. Imier, and that of Patrick Gyger towards le lieu unique, French National Live Arts Center in Nantes.

To celebrate this turning point with Jennifer and Patrick (but also with Marc Atallah and Veronica Tracchia, Patrick Gyger's successors as head of Maison d'Ailleurs), we have the great pleasure of inviting you to an evening buffet at Maison d'Ailleurs (Espace Jules Verne) on February 8, 2011 from 8 pm.

We look forward to seeing you on this occasion.

Dear friends,
Maison d†™Ailleurs Foundation has the honor of inviting you to the opening of the new exhibition

The Dr. Grordbort†™s exceptional exhibition
http://www.ailleurs....x.php?s=en&m=12

A Creation of Greg Broadmore

This event will take place on Saturday 9th April 2011, at 6 pm, in the presence of the artist.
From the 10th of April to the 21st of August, Maison d†™Ailleurs presents the work of author, artist and graphic designer, Greg Broadmore (New Zealand) employed by a company specializing in special effects in movies: Weta Workshop (The Lord of the rings, District 9, Avatar, ...). Exclusivity should be exercised: it is both the first presentation of this artist and the first opening of a Weta Shop - including number of products - in Europe.

The Universe of Dr. Grordbort†™s depicts a retro-future, a kind of future where steam technology mechanical and ethereal atomic alongside the pith helmet, baggy pants and a moustache to the former: the charms of the popular literature of the late nineteenth century do seem to be back. But “seem† only†¦ Indeed, if snapshots can appear rude or distasteful to a broody eye, they become biting and subtle as they condemn their own kind caricature: the work done and sneer suggests.

Greg Broadmore is an artist and a graphic designer. He worked on several world-renowned movies and produced, along with his films activities, two graphic books : Dr. Grordbort†™s†™s contrapulatronic dingus directory (2008) and Victory, scienctific adventure violence for young men and literate women (2009).
We hope to see you in the House!

29,08,2011, 14.21 Uhr: ----- Dear friends, The foundation of the Maison d†™Ailleurs, is pleased to invite you to the opening of its new exhibition : Halomancy. Poetical particles by Stéphane Halleux This event will take place on Saturday the 10th of September 2011, at 6 pm, in the presence of the artist. From the 11th of September 2011 until the 8th of January 2012, Maison d†™Ailleurs offers to exhibit the magical sculptures of the Belgian artist-artisan Stéphane Halleux. Some sixty original and unique works, most pieces on loan by private collectors from all over Europe, will animate the museum and provide an unforgettable experience to its visitors. Through these amazing figures, created by an artist with an incredible talent, everyone can exercise his own imagination, invent himself as a world universal hero of « steampunk » and expose himself to think otherwise. Stephane Halleux†™s work is exemplary: refusing any aesthetic categorization, but balancing with those decked out by his work, the Belgian artiste draws inspiration from our reality- the materials used are those of everyday life -all the while transposing it into a world that is both warm and quirky. This creative process is a rule of Art: transforming our everyday familiar lives and in doing so, reinterpreting it, giving it a new meaning; that is, in other words, fictionalizing it in order to better reinvent it. The early works of Stéphane Halleux prove so successful that, since 2005, he devotes himself entirely to his achievements. Before coming to present his talents to Maison D†™Ailleurs, the Belgian artist has multiplied exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States: San Diego, Oxford, Berlin, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Brussels, Paris, and now ... Yverdon-les-Bains. Looking already forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 10, 2011 Marc Atallah Director Maison d†™Ailleurs (The House of Elsewhere)

Dear friends,

It is with great pleasure that Maison d’Ailleurs informs you of its « exceptional » activities that will be carried on throughout the month of October 2011 – and it goes without saying that you are all invited to share all these events with us.

The reason for which this October is special dwells in the two exhibitions organized for your attention and that you ought not to miss.

You are first invited by the Maladière Center of Neuchâtel to invest its spaces at the Vintage Fair – a major event that will be held from 6 to 15 October 2011. The nine display cases of the exhibition « Des Robots et des hommes » (Of Robots and Men) mounted by the team of Maison d’Ailleurs, will unfold before children’s and adult’s eyes, books, pulp, board games and of course, toy robots – all belonging to the collection holdings of the museum.

As to the second exhibition, it is the Foundation’s turn to invite you to the opening of its new exhibition:

L’île de Pâques sans dessus dessous

(Easter Island upside down)

This event will be held Friday, October 21, 2011 at 19 h, and will take place at the Jules Verne area. In this regard, and for the first time in the history of the museum, it is in this area that the new temporary exhibition of Maison d’Ailleurs will be presented: you will have the opportunity to visit both L’île de Pâques sans dessus dessous (Easter Island upside down) and Halomancie: Stephane Halleux’s poetic material. The inaugural celebration of this previous one having already taken place, it is at the opening of this new exhibition that the Foundation of Maison d’Ailleurs invites you – and the ceremony will be attended by the ethnographic curator and by the two exhibition catalogs’ producer.

Program:

75]19h – opening of the Jules Verne area

75]19h15 – Official part

75]from 19h30 – Aperitif and tour of the exhibition

From October 22, 2011 to January 08, 2012, Maison d’Ailleurs proposes specifically to stage a face-to-face: the original artistic production of The Easter Island (statues of stone and wood, weapons, jewelry ) facing the fantasies and speculations of the Western world concerning this island (stories, films, comic strips). Indeed, very few places have been as much the subject of fanciful dreams as The Easter Island (Rapa Nui). The gigantic sculptures that adorn the coast and the volcanoes of the island have carried the imagination of writers of all kinds, giving rise to wild rantings: the last bastion of Atlantis, link to the afterlife, a remnant of an extraterrestrial civilization, mythical battlefields, first ecocide, etc.. But the artistic and archaeological remnants tell us, by fragments, a different story: that of a ingenious and peaceful people who succeeded to sublimate its isolation.

It is at this face-to-face, in the context of this overview , that the exhibition L’Île de Pâques sans dessus dessous (Easter Island upside down) invites you. Accompanied by a didactic speech, highlighting the real and imaginary challenges of The Easter Island, this exhibition is supplemented by two well illustrated books, expressly produced for this event: L’Île de Pâques est ailleurs by Denise Wenger and Rapa Nui. Un rêve nécessaire. L’Île de Pâques dans la littérature, la bande dessinée et au cinéma by Francis Valéry.

The innovative nature of this exhibition is enhanced by the exceptional quality of the pieces presented. Mainly from Swiss’ public and private collections, the majority of pieces are also shown to the public for the first time.

I am delighted and looking forward to meeting you at the Vintage Fair and to welcoming you on Friday, October 21, 2011 at the Jules Verne area.

Dear friends,
The House of Elsewhere wish to inform you about its activities during the months of November and December 2011 – activities for which you are obviously invited. Specifically, this season will be the occasion of inaugurating a special collaboration, since the 250th Birthday of the Library of Yverdon-les-Bains has allowed the museum to offer you the following events:
- November 3 to December 23, 2011, in the walls of the Library of Yverdon-les-Bains, an exhibition of utopian masterpieces, scary and satirical, that will be echoed with creations of youth and adults library users, will be held in the Library of Yverdon-les-Bains. You are cordially invited to attend the opening of this exhibition, entitled « Images of the future. Culture in the City », that will be held November 3 at 18h, in the Library, and will be followed at the Echandole theater, by the show « In brief… from the future ! ».
- On Thursday, December 8, 2011, at 18:30, always in the Library, a discussion will take place – called « Every-screen-identities » – between Muriel Imbach, stage director, and Marc Atallah, Director of the House of Elsewhere. The argument is : « When the border between reality and fiction is shrinking, what happens to the identity in the world, on stage or in front of a screen ? ».
- We also remind you that the House of Elsewhere currently presents two exhibitions : « Halomancie. Poetical Materials of Stéphane Halleux » and « Easter Island upside down ».
I’m looking forward to seeing you at the museum and during these extraordinary events,

19.12.2011, 14.29 Uhr: --- Dear friends, 2012 will be a remarkable year in the history of the House of Elsewhere. You may have heard about it, the museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys draws up an outstanding exhibition about games and play. The show will take over the entire museum and be greater than anything we have achieved so far. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you more about it for the moment. The upcoming exhibition at the House of Elsewhere must be unfolded bit by bit if we don’t want it to be trivialized or lost in the early hours of the New Year ! But one thing can be revealed: the museum works with many institutions and organizations to set up this project. And this newsletter has to do with one of these partnerships. The House of Elsewhere is happy to work together with Lift Conference and to inform you about about an exclusive promotion : “What Can the Future Do for You” Lift Conference 2012, 22-24 February 2012, Geneva. In only 6 years, Lift conference has become a key event for individuals, companies and organizations wishing to understand and anticipate what lies ahead, to reinvent or develop their organizations using innovation. Lift is an annual conference in Geneva that attracts innovators from around the world for three memorable days of inspirational speeches and informal networking. Hundreds of participants - from artists and musicians to engineers and scientists, from researchers to entrepreneurs - gather to share knowledge and experiences and get the new ideas and contacts they crave to fuel innovation. Due to the collaboration with the House of Elsewhere, Lift wishes to offer to the newsletter’s subscribers special Year-End promotion: 20% off on Lift12 tickets until December 31. Dear Friends,

In less than a month, the Maison d'Ailleurs, museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys, will open its new exhibition.
Playtime - Videogame mythologies is not an exhibition like the others : it's indeed the largest temporary exhibition ever presented in the museum !

As part of Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council's GameCulture - From Game to Art programme, Playtime - Videogame mythologies is a special exhibition devoted to the culture and art of video games. It explores how the relationship between play, various manners of gaming, and technology interrelate : more than fifty artworks, a history of gaming since the XVIIIth century, an original scenography and design, an uncommon exhibition catalogue, the largest Nintendo shop in Switzerland... Surprises are just beginning !

The opening ceremony of our new project will take place on March 10th, 2012, at 6 pm.
Save the date ! This exhibition is unique and that moment will be even more unique if you share it with us !

Until then, feel free to browse the website created especially for this exhibition at http://playtime.ailleurs.ch/en/ and feel free to share it with your friends and your contacts.

Hope to see you on March 10th, 2012

Dear friends,

The opening of Playtime – Videogame mythologies on last Saturday just ended and the party was superb: the world of video games has made its sensational entering at the Maison d’Ailleurs, and Yverdon-les-Bains lived at the rythm of the GameArt now.

Presenting an exhibition of this scale also assumed to schedule many events and to discover the huge range of the gaming area: Playtime is a wave exhibiting the existence of a vibrant space and it is in this space that the events organized during the year 2012 will dive.

Concretely, two events will be held in March 2012:

On Sunday, March 18th, 2012, at 8:00 p.m., in the Jules Verne’s Space of the Maison d’Ailleurs, the movie club of Yverdon-les-Bains will screen the film eXistenZ (David Cronenberg, 1999) and the Maison d’Ailleurs take this opportunity to invite the Professor Alain Boillat, specialized in science fiction movies to comment it (entrance fee: 12. - for adults / 10. - for pensioners, students / 6. - for the members of the movie club).

On Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., in the Jules Verne’s Space of the Maison d’Ailleurs, Professor Olivier Glassey, specialist of the virtual technology, will give a lecture entitled “When you poke the future, everyday life in sci-fi online games”(free admission).

I’m looking forward to seeing you at these special events,

Best regards,

Dear Friends,
Saturday, the 7th of April 2012, from 11am to 6pm, the Maison d’Ailleurs and Super Patate offer to all visitors an « retrogaming » experience : find the games of yesteryear, live again those crazy emotions or, for the youngest of us, discover them !
The theme that has been chosen for this first event is « 1985-1995 » (Retrogaming Saturdays will be held every first Saturday of the month until December). Remember... 1985... The early home consoles... Nintendo was then the leader of the field through the videogame icon, the star of the consoles : Super Mario ! And, next to Nintendo, the other console, the other video game star : Sega and its blue hero, Sonic.
Games to play :
Nintendo : Mario All Stars / TMNT / Parodius
Game Boy : Metroid / Zelda 1 & 2 / Mario Bros / Pokemon
Sega : Lion King / Sonic 1, 2 & 3
I’m looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, April 7th, to this historical experience. You’ll see that Mario and Sonic always give these emotions that made us vibrate, 25 years ago !
Do not forget to book your Sunday, April 15th, 2012, at 20h: Maison d’Ailleurs and CINEDICI will show the movie form Lars von Trier, Melancholia, in the Jules Verne’s Space.
Best regards,
Marc Atallah

- On May, 19th, 2012, the third Museum Night in Yverdon-les-Bains is an opportunity for the Maison d'Ailleurs to create an original program, in partnership with the Youth Council of the city: from 11am to 11pm, part of the Council will hold a LAN-Party and invite all visitors to participate in these great games where the social aspect of gaming is usually manifested in all its magnitude. Meanwhile, from 6pm to 11pm, other members of the Youth Council will invest the various rooms of the museum of their own sensitivity: in standing besides the artwork they have personally elected, the Youth will encourage us to share our impressions, or emotions, with them.

- On May, 20th, 2012, the International Museum's Day, will allow all visitors to pay half the price for seeing Playtime - Videogame mythologies. Indeed, all tickets will be 50% off : still too expensive, the Culture?!

- On May, 25th, 2012, at 7pm, Marc Atallah will host Vincent Gessler in the Jules Verne's Space, to discuss about the new book of the young author, Mimosa. We are reading Science fiction books, we are watching Sci-Fi movies, but Science fiction is also a part of a cultural and aesthetic movement that we have to understand if we want to reveal new aspects of the current productions. Come then to discover an unknown aspect of Science fiction : its criticism.

- On May, 26th, 2012, from 11am to 6pm, it is the time for the NIFFF to be hosted by the museum! To celebrate the partnership between the museum and the festival, this last one will screen three movies in the Jules Verne's Space throughout the day. The program? For now, it's a surprise!

As you can see, the Maison d'Ailleurs continues to offer you a stimulating and original programming.
One only thing is missing: you!

I'm looking forward to seeing you in the museum,

Best regards,

Marc Atallah
Director of the Maison d'Ailleurs

Ich war so frei, ein Banner in drei Variationen für das Maison d'Ailleurs zu bauen. Jemand bat mich darum, weil es keine gibt.. Wer sie nutzen mag: meinen Segen hat er (oder sie).

Dear Friends,

I know that you receive many solicitations from me and I hope you will understand their meaning: the Maison d'Ailleurs is a dynamic museum that dares to change its public, its events.

June is a busy month for the museum:

- On June 2nd, 2012, from 11 am to 6 pm, the third retrogaming session will be organized in the museum on the theme of "Mario".

- On June 3rd, 2012, at 8 pm, in the Jules Verne's Space of the Maison d'Ailleurs, the CINEDICI will screen Pierre Lacourt's documentary, Return on Earth. This reflexion on a world without oil will allow us to discuss with the film's director, in Switzerland at that time.

- From 4th to 6th June 2012, an international symposium will be held at UNIL, EPFL and Maison d'Ailleurs : "Powers of video games: from the discourses to the practices". This event is coupled with a public lesson, on the 5th of June 2012, at 6 pm in the Amphimax of the University of Lausanne. The course, entitled "Video games: culture or brutalization?" interrogates this dimension too often reduced to its playful aspects. It's obviously open to everyone, and free. You will find the program of this event here.

- On June 6th, 2012, at 7 pm, the Maison d'Ailleurs and the "Interface Sciences-Société" of the UNIL, organize a public lecture given by Rémi Sussan, a specialist in new technologies and renowned author ofThe Posthuman Utopias (2005). His lecture will focus on the theme of the posthuman and virtual worlds. The admission is free.

- On June 8th, 2012, 2 pm - 6 pm, all visitors of the Maison d'Ailleurs will discover the artworks made by the students of the OPTI-Lausanne, through a partnership between this institution and the museum : these works, enrolled in the program "OPTI invites itself elsewhere", show how today's teenagers appropriate this science fiction that, in many ways, is a part of our world. Since 6 pm, a mini-opening ceremony will be organized at the Jules Verne's Space : feel free to visit us, the students will be happy to answer your questions and to show you their works.

- On June 9th, 2012, from 3 pm to 5 pm, I will visit the FNAC/Lausanne (p. 6) in order to present some unknown aspects of the Playtime exhibition.

- At the end of June, an extraordinary event will be organized, but I'll tell you more about it in a few weeks...

Hoping that these events will interest you, and looking forward to seeing you in the museum,

Best regards,

Marc Atallah
Director of the Maison d'Ailleurs

FESTIVE OPENING IN THE HEART
OF YVERDON-LES-BAINS’ OLD TOWN

The Maison d'Ailleurs is pleased to invite you to a big free event organized in collaboration with the city of Yverdon-les-Bains on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. On this festive day the museum will launch two exhibitions and an unique museum experience.

Program of the opening:

Eingefügtes Bild

MEMORIES FROM THE FUTURE

After the success of the Jules Verne Space's opening – area devoted to the origins of science fiction that earned the Maison d’Ailleurs a nomination for the "European Museum of the Year Awards 2011" - the museum will launch on March 2 a new permanent space. Memories from the Future is the first world permanent exhibition dedicated to modern science fiction.

A hundred outstanding documents (books, comics, movie posters, toys, LPs) from the collections of the city of Yverdon-les-Bains, the biggest collections in Europe about alternative societies, science and technology’s imaginary, will be revealed for the first time. A unique discovery of the history and aesthetics of science fiction and its main media, through the rarest, most amazing and unexpected pieces of the museum collections. Many treasures inaccessible to visitors since the creation of the Maison d'Ailleurs, more than 35 years ago!
The Maison d'Ailleurs also proposes a unique museum experience by offering the visitor a complete understanding of the exhibitions.

Genesis: From Sketches to Artwork

The Maison d’Ailleurs launches a major retrospective of French artist Aleksi Briclot’s work, one of today’s best graphic designer. His technical virtuosity totally changed the face of image production in context of science fiction, superheroes and enchanted worlds of fantasy. The richness of Aleksi Briclot’s digital paintings and the perfect mastery of his work are leading inspirations and directions for next generations of artists.

The exhibition Genesis: From Sketches to Artwork (March 3 to August 25, 2013) immerses the enchanting world of digital art and witnesses the beginnings of a visionary form of artistic expression.

Stalker | Experimenting the Zone // 15.09.2013 – 02.03.2014

The exhibition pays tribute to the master piece of world cinema, Stalker (1979) as well as to the 80th birthday anniversary of its director, Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986, UK). Co-produced by the School of Business and Engineering HEIG-VD, this exhibition takes you into the bizarre universe of the cult film – thanks to both the interactive multimedia installations designed by the engineers of Heig –vd and the strange Zone fully invented and created by Rashith Safiullin (UK), the designer of the Tarkovsky’s film.
