The Libertarian Futurist Society has announced the winners of the for the 2014 Prometheus Award, recognizing pro-freedom novels published in the last year, and the Hall of Fame Award for best classic fiction:

HALL OF FAME AWARD

This category honors novels, novellas, stories, graphic novels, anthologies, films, TV shows/series, plays, poems, music recordings and other works of fiction first published or broadcast more than five years ago.

Falling Free, Lois McMaster Bujold (1988)

Author-filksinger Leslie Fish also won a Special Prometheus Award in 2014 for the combination of her 2013 novella “Tower of Horses” and her filk song “The Horsetamer’s Daughter”.

The awards will be presented in a ceremony during the 2014 World Science Fiction Convention at 8 p.m. Aug. 16, 2014.

In a separate awards ceremony, four-time-Prometheus-winning author Vernor Vinge will receive a Special Prometheus Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented during Conjecture/ConChord Oct. 10-12, 2014 in San Diego, California.

Science Fiction Research Association Award Winners 2015

 

The Pilgrim Award, named for J.O. Bailey†™s Pilgrims through Space and Time (1947), recognizes a lifetime of contributions to the field of science fiction and fantasy studies. This year†™s Pilgrim Award winner is Henry Jenkins.

The Pioneer Award is given is given to the writer or writers of the best critical essay-length work of the year. This year†™s Pioneer Award winner is Graeme MacDonald for “Improbability Drives: The Energy of SF† published in Paradoxa 26.

The Thomas D. Clareson Award for Distinguished Service is presented for outstanding service activities-promotion of SF teaching and study, editing, reviewing, editorial writing, publishing, organizing meetings, mentoring, and leadership in SF/fantasy organizations. This year†™s Clareson Award winner is Vonda McIntyre.

The Mary Kay Bray Award is given for the best essay, interview, or extended review to appear in the SFRA Review). This year†™s Mary Kay Bray Award winner is "A Roundtable: Under the Skin [film]," with contributions by Marleen S. Barr, Pawel Frelik, and Andy Hageman (issue #310).

The SFRA Student Paper Award recognizes the outstanding scholarly essay given at the annual conference by a student. This year†™s Student Paper Award winner is W. Andrew Shephard†™s “†™What is and What Should Never Be†™: Paracosmic Utopianism in Margaret Cavendish†™s The Blazing World.†

2016 Prometheus Award Finalists

 

The Libertarian Futurist Society has announced the Best Novel finalists for the 36th annual Prometheus Awards.

  Seveneves, by Neal Stephenson (William Morrow)
  The Just City, by Jo Walton (TOR Books)
  A Borrowed Man, by Gene Wolfe (TOR Books)


This is the first Prometheus nomination for Pierce Brown and Gene Wolfe. Naam previously won the 2014 Prometheus Award for Best Novel for Nexus, part of a trilogy that continued with Crux and ends with Apex. Stephenson won the Prometheus for Best Novel in 2005 for The System of the World. Walton won the Prometheus for Best Novel in 2008 for Ha†™penny

The award, sponsored by the Libertarian Futurist Society (LFS), was established in 1979. It has been presented during the Worldcon since 1982.

The award will be presented during MidAmeriCon II, the 74th World Science Fiction Convention, August 17-21 in Kansas City. The Prometheus Award includes a gold coin and plaque for the winner.

Gute Auswahl.

 

Pierce Browns Golden Sun (Red Rising Teil 2) kenne ich noch nicht, wenn es aber nur fast so gut ist wie der erste Teil, ist das schon viel.

 

Apex, der dritte Teil der Nexus Trilogie: hervorragend, wie schon die ersten zwei Teile. Wer intelligente, actionbetonte SF mit cyberpunkigen Elementen mag, wird absolut nicht enttäuscht sein. Vermutlich wird es eh bald übersetzt erscheinen. Sicher wieder durch Bernhard Kempen, wie schon bei den vorhergehenden Bänden.

 

Seveneves (dt. Amalthea), Neal Stephensons prächtiges Ziegel-Epos. Nach dem ersten Satz -- "Der Mond explodierte ohne Vorwarnung und ohne erkennbaren Grund ..." liest praktisch jeder weiter. Gut, der deutsche Titel ist etwas "na ja", dafür kann aber der Autor nichts.

 

Gene Wolfes A Borrowed Man habe ich gerade fertig gelesen. Der Roman wird sicher viele Leser irritieren, wenn sie manche Dinge zu direkt deuten. Großartiger Stoff, aber man muss sehr, sehr aufpassen.
